Meet a Simply Tutoring Tutor - Sheryl Alvaraz
Background
Sheryl grew up in the Houston area and graduated from Alief Hastings High School. She received her teaching certification from Sam Houston State University and taught for many years in the classroom. For the last two years since she retired, she has been tutoring.
Sheryl recalls a memory: When growing up, kindergarten was just a half day program. My sister and best friend left for school in the mornings on the bus, but I was left at home with my mother because I was in the afternoon class. I was upset because I wanted to ride the bus with them in the mornings. My mom took me up to the school and the principal approved that I could be moved to the morning kindergarten class. Once I discovered that my mom wasn't going to be staying with me for class, I decided that I would rather stay in the afternoon so that I could spend the mornings with my mom. So, I was once again in the afternoon class!
Sheryl has fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher and working with adults and students to learn to the best of their ability. She thinks that would have made her mom happy had she lived and had the opportunity to see Sheryl grow up. Her most interesting teaching experience is when she taught a non-English speaker and saw the progress that he made. It was so fulfilling to see the difference that Sheryl made in his life and his future.
